Nest me in your proud, soft hold
after coasting through quiet streets
home. The road ahead shimmering
with promise, the road behind
paved with much hard work.

To finally accept acceptance
as a gift from the heart
to the blood. The tender
circuitry of a mother’s arms
around her child.

There is much to be pleased about.
There is more hard work to be done.

If my mouth were to move, I would miss it.

You’re like,
I don’t know—
imagine a foggy
morning.
Consider a silence
in which you
have failed me

and to speak of it would clear the air.

Two people lived. One said, “I’m having a hard time saying what I want to say. I’m happy when I’m around you.”
”I’m happy when I’m around you,” The other responded.
”Good. I want you to be happy.”
”And I want you to be happy.”
Then time passed and something happened. Then it happened again. When it happened a third time, one said to the other, “I wish you would not do that thing you sometimes do.”
          ”But I enjoy it.”
”I know. But I do not.”
          ”Why didn’t you tell me?”
”I’m telling you now. Would you stop, for me?”
          ”I’m sorry. I will stop.”
          ”Thank you. I love you.”
          ”I love you, too.”
However, the other did not stop but only hid it from the one, whom eventually found out and confronted the other with the evidence.
          ”What is this?”
          ”I don’t know.”
”Well I do. You lied to me.”
”I did not want to hurt you.”
”You are selfish and do not care about me.”
”That’s not true! I love you!”
”If you loved me, you would not hurt me!”
”If you loved me, you would let me be happy.”
”I cannot love someone who is happy doing this,” one said to the other, who was now crying openly.
          ”Have you ever loved me?”
”I don’t know,” said the one. “I think we both want different things.”
          ”Like what?” Asked the other.
”I’m not sure what you want because you’re no good at communicating.”
They were at an impasse; one or the other would have to change to overcome it. A period of time passed in which they did not talk about it, until one saw clearly how much the other had been affected.
”I’m sorry,” one said. “I guess I’m trying to protect myself and it’s very confusing and I’m not good at communicating, either.”
”No, I’m sorry,” said the other. “I shouldn’t have lied to you. I don’t want to be that.”
The two people embraced. “I will not be so judgmental in the future,” one said.
”And I will communicate better,” said the other.
What once was now being no longer, the two people went on living.
